What you need to know about Geysers

GeyserHome owners who underestimate the need for geyser maintenance are compromising the safety of all those living inside. Correct geyser installation is important, a burst geyser can result in loss and damage to property as well as large geyser repair insurance claims. Check the geyser's plumbing system regularly. Geysers that are installed in places like a ceiling are not very safe, imagine the consequences if the geyser burst and you were sleeping below. Many old geyser installations were not done according to industry standards. Practical home ownership aught to include a geyser maintenance check regularly. Remember that a geyser that is overheated can be compared to half a kilo of TNT. A failing thermostat can push the temperature more that 70 degrees C with so much pressure on the rise faulty safety valves may not release and you can end up with a huge explosion on your hands.

Getting to know your geyser's plumbing system set up with regular geyser maintenance could save you unnecessary geyser repair in the future and prolong it's life. If you are installing a new one it is necessary to call a plumber for geyser installation. A burst geyser can really be a disaster on your hands. Essentially Geysers can be compared to a kettle in your kitchen. The geyser has a thermostat to regulate the water temperature. So for example should the temperature go higher than a certain degree and the water drops below this temperature an element comes into play until the temperature is back to normal.

Reasons for faulty geysers could be caused by...

  • A steady flow of water from a geysers could mean a pressure control valve needs replacement. Geyser repair for a dripping geyser overflow pipe is common as water heats up then cools down.

  • If the geyser's plumbing system has a problem thermostat as it is stuck in either the on or off mark resulting in either only cold water or boiling water you need geyser maintenance. If it is stuck in the on position resulting in boiling, call a plumber immediately and switch the geyser off before you have a burst geyser.

  • Should your geyser installation be in your ceiling and have water leaking, turn the geyser off at the main board and turn the water off as well as open the taps to alleviate some pressure. Then call a plumber!

  • Water too cold – change the geyser setting up a bit. However, if it already on the highest setting you probably need a new one.

  • If the overflow is pouring out steam or hot water you may have a problem with your thermostat and will need to get a plumber in to evaluate it asap. Switch of the geyser until it is fixed.

  • If pipes and filters become blocked it leaving very low pressure it could be due to the valve.

  • If the water is cold and the power is on you may have a faulty element or thermostat. You will need a professional help.

Energy saving tips and Geysers

  • Shower instead of bathing.

  • Avoid cleaning plates and dishes with a hot water rinse, this method uses water from the geyser which in turn means the geyser has to heat up the cold water coming in.
